Social engagement

As a retail company, it stands to reason that METRO GROUP has close ties with its various social environments. Every day, we cultivate relationships with many millions of people: people who work for or with us at our locations, people who shop at our stores, or people with whom we have some other relationship. Our social and environmental engagement in the places where we are based and interact with people is something that we also see as a means of adding value. This is because it helps to overcome social challenges. Our commitment to environmental and social issues therefore aims to foster intercultural dialogue, to lend support to our locations and their local communities, and to provide assistance directly to those in need. In this way, METRO GROUP meets its social responsibility as a corporate citizen.

Trust towards the various players forms the foundation of a company’s acceptance by society. A key part of the work that goes into fostering this trust is interaction with our stakeholders: in addition to the close relationships maintained by our employees, suppliers and customers, there are many other people who come in contact with our company. Various expectations concerning our business actions arise from this interaction. In the interplay of company and social values, we view sustainable business management as a way to help to meet the challenges facing society within the context of our own business activities.

Football Club Fortuna Düsseldorf

The Düsseldorf-based METRO GROUP has extended its sponsorship for Fortuna Düsseldorf and will support the second-league football club in the 2015/16 season as a fortunaPARTNER. Among other aspects, this commitment involves the direct backing of the youth training centre of Fortuna at Flinger Broich, which was recently awarded a second star on the occasion of the certification of DFB, the German Football Association, and DFL, the agency of the German Football League.

Art and culture

Düsseldorf Festival

Every year, the Düsseldorf festival proves again that there is no better city in which to celebrate an innovative festival which includes all the arts and which bears a clear, European signature. The festival, which is held in Burgplatz Square in the heart of the old part of the city, was first held in 1990 and has since never failed to delight a wide audience from the city and surrounding region. Up to 500 artists from all around the world enchant some 25,000 visitors with their music, dance and circus performances. Since 2005, METRO GROUP has supported the Düsseldorf Festival as its main sponsor.

METRO Foundation Sculpture Park

Since spring 2006, METRO GROUP has been presenting works of art from the METRO Sculpture Park Foundation on the Group's premises in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The exhibits are a legacy which the METRO GROUP inherited from the takeover of Horten AG in the 90s. The METRO Foundation Sculpture Park takes the role of a model for city architectural design representing the coexistence of work, trade and art.

Moreover, the foundation promotes contemporary arts and culture in Düsseldorf. Under the patronage of the District President and in cooperation with the regional capital Düsseldorf and key representatives of the Düsseldorf arts scene, the METRO GROUP allows mainly young visual artists to present their works to a large audience.

Furthermore, the foundation awards scholarships to eligible artists and organises presentations and exhibitions.
