Trendsetters in the industry

Trendsetter in the industry

Saturn stands for technological expertise and a passion for technology. A huge selection of fascinating brand products always offered at low prices and competent advice and customized service form the basis for Saturn’s unique success. Since it was founded in 1961, the company has been presenting the latest technology trends and aligning its products to suit the needs of its customers. Today, Saturn relies on several distribution channels that make up its comprehensive multichannel concept. Customers cannot only shop at the local Saturn store, but also in the online shop or even on the go via smartphone. Saturn is an independent sales brand under the roof of Media-Saturn Holding GmbH, Europe’s number one consumer electronics retailer, and is represented in Germany with 157 stores. There are 199 Saturn stores in total in Germany, Austria, Poland and Luxembourg. In October 2015, the first Saturn Connect stores were also opened in Trier and Cologne and now present digital lifestyle products and services in prime downtown locations in Germany.

The presentation of the products in the Saturn stores is as innovative as the products themselves: state-of-the-art technology becomes an experience; diversity and topicality reign supreme. The average product portfolio comprises 45,000 different articles including consumer electronics, new media, domestic appliances, telecommunications equipment, computers, cameras and camcorders. Saturn flagship stores, which carry an inventory of up to 100,000 products, can be found in a number of major cities. All the stores not only offer numerous brand-name products from leading manufacturers but also Saturn's exclusive brands KOENIC, PEAQ, ok and ISY, which boast a particularly favorable price-performance ratio. Expert customer advice, a comprehensive range of services as well as Saturn's Power Service, with its highly competitive fixed prices, neatly round off the line-up. This includes delivery, assembly, repairs, computer support and many other services.

With the FLIP4NEW buy-back service, Saturn offers an additional practical service. Customers can exchange used electronic and electrical devices and media for a Saturn shopping voucher both in the bricks-and-mortar stores and in the online shop via its recommerce provider.

Online shop with over 200,000 different products

Saturn's online shop, which is open 24/7 at www.saturn.de, is a major new addition that neatly complements the fixed-location stores. It offers a wide range of top-sellers from every product category with new items being added regularly. A Saturn app provides access to the online product portfolio via smartphone or tablet PC. As part of the multichannel concept, the online shop is first and foremost intended to accommodate changed buying habits. It offers customers flexibility in terms of time, detailed information about products and prices as well as maximum security during the checkout process. Saturn's online shop is closely linked with the local stores, which means that products that have been purchased online can be picked up at the nearest Saturn store free of charge – even the very same day, depending on availability. Customers buying online can also get advice and take advantage of the various services, such as product exchange or repair, at their local store.

At the forefront of new trends

The development of technology in the electronics industry is extremely dynamic. Innovations such as 4K televisions, smartphones, multi-room systems and action cameras have gained significant market shares within only a short period of time. Rarely a day goes by without new products and models being launched onto the market. Saturn is a showcase for this constant change. Customers will immediately find the latest innovations at Saturn just as they would at a trade fair. Saving energy is currently a hot topic that Saturn supports by identifying marking particularly energy-efficient devices with the label "Utopia empfiehlt.". Saturn is also at the forefront of new trends in the entertainment sector, where not only the wide range, but also Saturn's own entertainment platform JUKE are delighting an increasing number of customers. Over 40 million songs, more than 15,000 movies and series, 1.5 million e-books and around 2,400 games and software products are available from JUKE via streaming or downloading at any time.

At the forefront of new trends

The company

A key factor in Saturn's continued success is the company's decentralised organisational structure. The Saturn stores are not outlets but rather independent companies in which the respective store managers are co-owners. This provides them with great motivation for driving the success of their stores. Given a high level of autonomy, they decide on the product mix, marketing, advertising and personnel planning for their particular store. This enables them to respond to local preferences and accommodate specific customer wishes as best possible. Company headquarters in Ingolstadt provides the stores with support by ensuring the ongoing further development of the consumer electronics superstore concept and the cost-efficient handling of administrative tasks. It also assumes responsibility for expanding to new locations and developing the multichannel offering.

Growth in Germany and Europe

After the company's founders sold Saturn to Kaufhof Warenhaus AG, new Saturn stores were opened from 1985 on, initially in Frankfurt and then in other German cities.

In 1990, there was another change of owner, after which the holding company for the Media Markt stores gradually acquired the existing Saturn stores. Since then, the two brands Saturn and Media Markt have been managed independently of one another under the roof of Media-Saturn-Holding GmbH in which METRO GROUP has a majority shareholding.

Saturn currently operates over 150 155 stores in Germany, with sales spaces ranging from 2,500 to 10,000 square metres. This also includes the biggest consumer electronics store in the world, which boasts 18,000 square metres of sales space and is located in Hamburg's Mönckebergstraße.

Saturn's spectacular advertising has also made a significant contribution to the company's success. The company currently emphasizes its focus on and passion for technology with its claim “Soo! muss Technik” and uses the advertising slogan “Bei Technikfragen, Tech-Nick fragen” (Ask Tech-Nick if you have an questions on technology”) that features the well-liked store employee, Tech-Nick.
