TrainingIn order to cover their future demand for specialist staff, METRO GROUP is making considerable investment in the vocational training
of young people. With a training quota of 8.7 percent in 2008, METRO GROUP ranks among the leading companies in Germany providing vocational training. Cooperations with schools help provide young people with an early insight into the range of opportunities available in the retail sector. In countries where no officially-recognised vocational training is available, METRO GROUP ensures the company meets its needs in terms of future specialists with own training programs.
With the aim of facilitating pupils’ first steps into a career, METRO GROUP has been committed to learning partnerships with the Institut Unternehmen & Schule (company and school institute) for several years. Two pilot projects which marked the beginning of the cooperation with the national education system have become models of success: There are now already over 100 permanent regional learning partnerships across Germany between stores of METRO GROUP's sales divisions and neighbouring schools.
Due to the lack of dual vocational training in Eastern Europe, METRO GROUP has developed the training and qualification programme "Metro Education". Since the year 2000, the programme provides young people with the latest know-how in the retail sector and first practical job experience. METRO GROUP supports teaching at local business schools and provides internship positions at the stores of its sales brands. This way, it increases the skills level amongst young people for a career in retailing. Following the great success of Metro Education in Poland, Russia and Romania, METRO GROUP also extended the programme to the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 2008.
