Working conditionsMETRO GROUP is a worldwide advocate for fair and humane working conditions, so that its employees remain highly productive and motivated over the long-term. Along with the compliance with internationally-recognised standards
, this also translates as ensuring safety at work as well as safeguarding employee health.
In Germany, METRO GROUP cut the number of working accidents in 2007 by 4 percent when compared to the previous year. Thanks to preventive measures as well as the intensive training of management and employees, there was an average of 14 accidents at the workplace with over three working days lost per 1,000 employees. This places METRO GROUP below the industry average.
METRO GROUP has been gradually building up an operative health management
system. In selected stores and operations, the company has been testing ways of improving the physical and mental fitness of employees. The GO Pilot Project of the Metro Cash & Carry wholesale store in Cologne-Godorf received the German Employer’s Liability Insurance award. With actions including ergonomics consultations or health classes at the workplace, the store team won first prize in the "Healthy employee – healthy company" category.
Only healthy employees are efficient and committed employees. According to this principle, since 2008 the Media-Saturn Group has introduced a range of initiatives under the slogan "Fit bleibt vorn" (fitness is king) at its Ingolstadt location in order to promote the health of its employees. Including a running club and a section of the intranet devoted to tips for a healthy lifestyle. The participation of Media-Saturn employees in the Ingolstadt run and half marathon are further examples. The activities also focus on "healthy eating". The intranet features a glossary of vitamins and a quiz on the healthy eating pyramid to show employees how they can combine daily office life with a nutritious diet. A range of healthy drinks and foods is available at the location’s cafeteria. A "prevention" aspect focusing on the "work-life balance", rounds off the health initiative.
METRO GROUP in Poland organised a "Health day" for employees at the Warsaw headquarters in summer of 2007. Here, medical consultants gave presentations on themes including healthy eating or the effects of stress and gave advice on employee health issues. Participants were also able to get a check-up on their blood sugar levels and blood pressure or measure their BMI. The canteen provided a special menu prepared by consultants for those interested in eating and nutrition.
