Since May 2000, METRO GROUP has been operating its own Representative Office in Turkey. The office's main task is to promote and develop the company's relations with the Turkish government, the pertinent authorities as well as NGOs. Thanks to its continuing high growth rate and a population that likes to shop, the Turkish market is one of the strongest growth drivers for METRO GROUP worldwide. METRO Cash & Carry currently generates approximately 60 percent of its total sales in Turkey. Media Markt and Saturn as well as Real account for approximately 20 percent respectively. The consumer electronics stores witnessed a skyrocket sales increase since entering the market: between 2007 and 2010, sales rose almost 18-fold. Traditional retail concepts like small, family-run "bakkal" shops are still particularly popular with the Turkish population. They account for a market share of approximately 75 percent. This works to the advantage of METRO Cash & Carry: the self-service wholesale company supplies independent shops and other professional customers with a wide range of food and non-food products. METRO GROUP is an important employer on the Bosporus. In Turkey, it employs approximately 7,000 employees. More than half of them work at METRO Cash & Carry. The retail group attaches great importance to qualifying its employees.
