Independence in 1991 prompted far-reaching modernisation processes in many areas of Kazakhstani society. In economic terms, the country is one of the most successful former Soviet republics. Growth rates have been among the highest in the world since 2000. Although oil production has remained the country’s most important economic pillar, other sectors are gaining in importance.
