Metro Cash & Carry's corporate social responsibility has been implemented under the slogan of "Care & Share" since 2008. The programme assists people who depend on donations of food and other everyday necessities.In recent months, a large number of dedicated Metro Cash & Carry employees have worked to expand Care & Share internationally. By March 2010, 18 countries where Metro Cash & Carry does business had successfully adapted the initiative. In five other countries, including Egypt, India and Russia, Care & Share is on the verge of implementation.

Metro Cash & Carry Vietnam distributed 4,500 food packages to needy families as part of the programme "Metro Care & Share and TET 2010" in the Vietnamese province of Binh Dinh in January 2010. The occasion for these donations was the TET celebration, which is the first day of the new lunar year according to the Chinese calendar, and the most important holiday in Vietnam. The aid packages primarily contained basic foods that are typically consumed during the TET celebration. All items were from the private labels Aro, Fine Food and Horeca Select. In total, Metro Cash & Carry Vietnam donated 17.5 tonnes of rice, 4.5 tonnes of sugar, 8,100 litres of oil, 4.5 tonnes of mixed spices, 2.72 tonnes of canned meat, 540 kilograms of instant white coffee mix, and 800 kilogrammes of noodles.

In January 2010, Metro Cash & Carry Bulgaria took part in the "Healthy Eating and Cooking" day of action, an initiative of the European Union promoting healthy, balanced diets for children. Around 500 pupils from 20 schools, as well as representatives from health institutions participated in the event at the Inter Expo Centre in Sofia to receive information on the principles of a healthy and balanced diet. In a reflection of the initiative's current theme, "Fruit for school", Metro Cash & Carry provided fresh fruit to all participants. The event, which was held in Bulgaria for the third time, was organised by the local representative office of the European Commission and Euro-Toques, a European association of top chefs.

In December 2009, Metro Cash & Carry was recognised by the Ukrainian Corporate Social Responsibility Centre for its support of local food banks. Last year, the sales division signed a partnership agreement with the non-profit organisation Helpica Foundation within the framework of "Care & Share". The objective of the agreement is to regularly provide food and other daily necessities to needy people such as street children or the physically handicapped. The company received an award in the category "Community Development and Support" for this work. With this competition, the Corporate Social Responsibility Development Centre is aiming to introduce the public to socially responsible companies and honour best practices.
